This Screen-print utilizes both stylistic and cultural references of Japan. Stylistically, it uses motifs of Woodblock prints.
Culturally, it symbolizes on the idea of ‘tatemae’ (the official position) and ‘hon-ne’ (true voice). These terms are used to describe a difference between what is said and what is meant.

Relating to ‘tatemae’ and ‘hon-ne,’ the various masks surrounding a single person represents different faces/ personalities one can choose to put on in the world. This is growing significantly in our society as technology and other methods of interaction dominates, like social media and dating apps.
